Two events on image description during the Bologna Children's Book Fair 2025

APACE seminar and a meet-up on accessible publishing and image description on 31 March 2025

On 28 June 2025, the legislation resulting from the European Accessibility Act will come into force. E-book services are also covered by this legislation. With the legislation in mind, the APACE project is organising a seminar and a meet-up on 31 March 2025 during the Bologna Children's Book Fair on the theme of Image Descriptions. You are very welcome to join us!

Seminar 'Bringing stories to life: inclusive strategies for accessible illustrations in children’s books and more'

March 31, 2025, 10:30-11:15h, BBPlus Theatre

Text and images each contribute in their own way to the experience of a story in children’s books and more. Making images accessible to readers with visual impairments is essential for a complete and inclusive reading experience. Image description is a means of accessibility, as is the choice of inherently accessible illustrations: “How do I tackle both challenges as a publisher, author, or illustrator?”

Anne Bottenheft and Anke Kersten (both Image Specialists at Dedicon, the Netherlands) and Elisa Molinari (Project Manager at Fondazione LIA) are the panelists during this seminar.

Networking event on accessibility and image descriptions

March 31, 2025, 14.00-16.00h, Sala Notturno

After the seminar, participants will be invited to join a networking event with international colleagues and accessibility experts. This meet-up will provide opportunities to raise questions, challenges and solutions when it comes to image descriptions in publications.

After the walk-in with drinks and a snack and a short introduction, participants can choose between two thematic tables led by accessibility experts: 'Images and AI' and 'Image descriptions and publishing accessible e-books'.

Both events are open to those interested in accessible publishing and image descriptions, when you are attending the Bologna Children's Book Fair.

The event is organized in the framework of APACE, co-funded by the Creative Europe programme of the European Union.
